Pain Relief from Two Essential Oils
Clary Sage (for Clarity) and Lavender (for Constancy and Self-Confidence) are two sweet oils to captivate your senses. Because their natures fit perfectly with our needs, essential oils of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia, with cooling and sedating actions) and Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea, with activating warmth) persuade our nerves to calm down, regulate our emotions and lessen pain when we are distressed, either physically or psychologically.
Many essential oils offer pain relief with their particular aroma and chemical composition. The term “pain-relief” often refers to musculoskeletal pain. Below I present impressions of two essential oils that are pain-relieving in the sense of the body, but are considered even more desirable for allaying emotional frustration or anger. Essential oils can be blended with them for healing by inhalation or spot application to the skin.
Clary Sage
Having medicinal value for many complaints, the herb we know as Clary Sage was known in ancient times by the Greek and Roman physicians. From the same family of plants as Lavender, Clary Sage’s botanical name is Salvia sclarea. Its unique fragrance is a combination of over 200 substances. (See reference below.)
Aromas of Clary Sage
The aromas of Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) are intense, tea-like, spicy and sweet, harmonized by the variety of notes in its unique character. If it’s labelled “Salvia sclarea”, along with the country of origin. the essential oil of Clary Sage is expected to be steam distilled from the plant itself, without additives to boost scent.
Clary Sage pairs well with aromas of the Mint family, such as Lavender, or with fruit oils of the Citrus family, and others such as Clove Bud, Black Pepper or Juniperberry essential oils. See below for a combination of the flowering tops of Clary Sage with flowers or seed scents.
Lavender
An essential oil steam-distilled from the flowering tops (including flowers and fresh, new leaves) comes from Lavender, also known as Lavandula angustifolia. The name for its much-loved fragrance, Lavender comes from the botanical Latin word for “to wash”.
Like Clary Sage, this plant was celebrated by the people and physicians in Greek and Roman times. It thus has a venerable reputation for healing emotional and physical conditions which was handed down to us through its popularity in Europe, the Middle Ages, in monasteries, royal courts, and generally loved by all. In our times, Lavender has been studied for these same properties and is heralded as a premier essential oil for inhalation during stressful medical procedures.
Medicinal Value of Lavender
Having medicinal value for many complaints, Lavender’s properties include sedative and soothing qualities. Lavender offers calming, cooling energies for those suffering from inflammation and congestion. According to author Peter Holmes, Lavender is restorative to the nervous system, especially when the general malaise of aches and pains, headache, irritability and insomnia are present. Lavender offers analgesic (pain) relief, is anti-inflammatory, and calms spasms. The essential oil is known as sedative for nervous complaints, allowing sleep to relieve a person who is tense and cannot unwind or let go.
The aromatic therapeutics of Lavender essential oils can address nervous agitation in our psyches. Our olfactive sense makes use of the particular aromas of the essential oils of Lavender, also Lavender CO2.
How can we be sure that these aromatics offer emotional healing?
Of the many studies that show the effects of these aromas, all concern a positive outcome from inhalation of Lavender essential oil. Their healing is doubled when paired with another essential oil’s aroma. When purchasing a bottle of Lavender essential oil, ensure that the botanical name Lavandula angustifolia appears on the label. See more below in NOTES.
Double Notes & Duo Scents
Double Notes or Duos are a perfumer’s way of expressing a simple concept in a blend of two essences. The therapeutics of two scents are derived from the purity of fragrances combined that produce synergy or double the offering of a single essential oil.
There’s good reason to intentionally blend two oils together. Two oils together offer benefits that in combination are greater than the sum of their parts.
As author Jennifer Rhind puts it:
“a single note has the olfactory signature that resonates with the client … as does a blend of just two oils that retain their individuality but are harmonious” p. 46
I believe she is saying that two oils can double your loyalty to their aromas by restoring an awkward or suffering state of mind.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) for Constancy, Loyalty
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) for Clarity, Inspiration
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) + Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Clary Sage and Lavender pair well together to support the nervous system. Such a restorative and relaxing blend can be applied in cases of deep-seated or hidden apathy. Especially attuned to the Kapha sensitivities.
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus or C. flexuosus) + Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender and Lemongrass is a bright and harmonious combination of lemon-citrus and a floral. Lemongrass offers to revitalize emotional vigor, perceptiveness, aptitude for calculating, focus, clarity, and positivity. Lavender underscores and supports Lemongrass. Such a blend is appropriate for depressed states in a Vata or Kapha body type.
Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) + Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Blending these two oils will most certainly create a strongly healing blend for someone suffering from sleeplessness. Both oils are calming, with Lavender being anti-convulsant and Roman Chamomile relieving spasms. Together the two oils smooth away congestion and nervous debility.
Rose (Rosa damascena as Rose Otto) + Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
A blend of two oils are beneficial to emotional suffering. Rose (Rosa species) is chosen to go with Lavender to extend and support each other’s emotional calming actions. Because Rose seeks to resolve heartache, low self-regard or indifference, it pairs well with an emotionally soothing oil such as Lavender. Rose Otto is a prepared dilution of Rosa damascena, in Jojoba Oil.
Appropriate for all doshas.
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) + Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
Combine Clary Sage with Geranium to ease musculoskeletal aches and pains. I chose Clary Sage to pair with Geranium to emphasize the soothing power of substances they both have, creating a synergistic combination for pain.
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) + Juniperberry (Juniperus communis)
Combining Clary Sage with Juniperberry (Juniperus communis) results in a euphoric, beautiful scent. This combination is advantageous for a congested and stuck temperament, or for a person who’s suffering physically from lower abdomen discomforts.
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) + Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majorana)
Clary Sage and Sweet Marjoram have similar effects on the nervous system: both reduce pain and sensitivity to it. Such a restorative and relaxing blend can be applied in cases of deep-seated or hidden apathy. Especially attuned to the Kapha individual.
NOTES:
Both Clary Sage and Lavender are subject to adulteration. These oils are available as absolutes, which are added to perfume blends in “duos”. The chemical constituents of each oil may vary with oils produced in different regions. Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is grown in France, Bulgaria, Ukraine, England, Hungary, according to PHolmes. True Lavender (L.angustifolia) is grown in France, England, China, Tasmania, Japan, and the American Pacific Northwest. When purchasing, make sure the label reads with the exact botanical name, with country of origin, if not on the label, at least available from the supplier per your batch number.
