Lavender’s Love

A Lavender’s Love is generous and free for the asking!  Yet, not all Lavenders smell the same.  So, because we have a few Lavenders—there are 6 named types* and more—I’ve chosen one of them (True Lavender or Lavandula angustifolia) to celebrate the energy of summer this year.

Steeped in herbal, garden, and aromatic history, the essential oils of Lavender are well-known for their affinity to all 7 of our bodily systems.

Inhaling Lavender essential oil – a ritual pleasure carried through the ages.

Lavenders were the plant that the ancients reached for when they wanted to become clean, when they sought for relief from mental and physical congestion.

Lavender is known as the herb of cleanliness. In how many products we use daily is the main aroma the scent of lavender?  It might be on the order of 2/3 of them!  We regularly wash with Lavender soap, laundry detergent, etc. A small wonder since its name comes from the word “lavare” which means to wash.

The essential oils and aromas of the Lavenders blend well with Summer’s heat.

*Lavender essential oil in this post is steam distilled essence of the flowering tops of the plant Lavandula angustifolia, grown in France, England, the U.S., Bulgaria, Japan, and India.

More than being a source of pleasant aromas, Lavender essential oil is blended successfully for harmony and support.  Lavender and other green scents.  Lavender and seed oils.  Lavender and flower essences.  Lavender and woods, lavender and resins.  Lavender and roots.  Lavender and fruits.

Whenever we need assistance with mood (depression, anxiety, irritability, tension), digestive upset, circulation issues, aches and pains, inflammation, and more, we can turn to Lavender and herbaceous scents for their green and healing floral notes.

How does simply inhaling an aroma do all of that?

It turns out that the practice of inhaling scents helps us to adapt to changes.  When we are involved in making decisions, that activity may be hampered if a negative mood, a headache, upset stomach, worry about inflammation, and more keep us from making our best decisions. Taking time to reserve a few moments to calm or to assess a situation, inhaling an aroma we like, and allowing ourselves to get comfortable with ourselves is a beautiful way to notice and accept changes, or to change our minds, and to bolster our will.  Smelling an essential oil introduces a sense of calm to the body, allaying physical complaints if they are not acute or life-threatening.  (See NOTES, below).

Does it have to be Summer to benefit from Lavender essential oil blends?

— Absolutely!  Or, it has to be Fall or Winter or Spring!  You’ll receive the goodness of Lavender any time of year because she is so adaptable.  But do you want to know something else?  The secret is out on Lavender, a plant which yields variations in scent and therefore, use.  These are specific to certain conditions of the body, such as colds or flu, and convalescence.  Clonal Lavenders that are similar to but milder than the original L. angustifolia.  Also, a difference between wild-harvested Lavender and cultured or farmed. And Spanish Lavender has the strongest scent of all. Stay tuned for more Lavenders to be explored as the year turns.

Herbs like Lavender address more than one bodily system, offering healing to the body, system-wide.  Properties of herbs such as Lavender, Rosemary, Peppermint, Ylang, Rose, and Sandalwood are cool and dry.  The fragrances of essential oils are blended for maximum enjoyment as aroma oils, the oils to inhale and savor from an olfactory perspective.  A very small amount of essential oil from roots and resins are added to affix the scent, to help them stay fresh longer.
