Spirit of Summer Body Oil — Recipe

Relaxing to tense conditions of physical pain or mental distress, the soothing scents of Rose, Jasmine, and Ylang-Ylang essential oils provide respite from frantic activity or anguish.

Spirit of Summer in a Body Oil

Spirit of Summer is a blend of essential oils in a carrier oil, a 1-2% dilution for spot application, anointing the body, or inhalation.

Spirit of Summer Ingredients:

2 drops Rose (Rosa damascena ) absolute (see Tip below)
4 drops Ylang-Ylang Extra (Cananga odorata) essential oil
2 drops Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) absolute
3 drops Neroli (Citrus aurantium var amara) essential oil
1 drop Frankincense (Boswellia Carter) essential oil
1 ounce glass bottle with pump or dropper top

Jojoba (Simmondsia sinensis) oil* to fill bottle to its neck
*Use a blend of Jojoba and Argan (Argania spinosa) oils, if desired.

Spirit of Summer Anointing Oil is Enchanting

To make it, blend essential oils by adding them one by one into a 1 ounce glass bottle with a pump or dropper top. Then pour in the carrier oil blend to fill the bottle to the neck.

Use organic oils whenever possible, such as Organic Jojoba Oil or a mix of Jojoba and Organic Argan Oil, to pour over the essential oil blend. Other possibilities for carrier oils with low scent are Marula Oil; adding Organic Olive Oil and Rosehip Seed oil would also work well.

Cap tightly. Gently shake and turn upside-down to swirl the mixture.

To use:

Pump or drop a quarter-sized amount into one open palm. Rub palms together and breathe into these refreshing notes. Tap your oiled palms over your hands, arms, legs and/or feet. Then massage in the oil. Best after bath or shower but you can apply anytime.

Tips on Essential Oils in the Blend:

Scents and essential oils of Rose (Rosa damascena) and Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum), are quite expensive and therefore purchasing the absolutes of these flower oils may make them less costly. Make sure to ascertain their quality however, by noting the ingredients listed on the bottles: does it indicate the botanical name? For Rose that would be Rosa x damascena, or Rosa centifolia; for Jasmine, that would be Jasminum grandiflorum. See my explanation for why the botanical name on the label is important!

The third scent, Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata) is distilled four times to reap the full benefit of its aroma. You want the one labelled No. 1 or Extra. The odour of Ylang-Ylang Complete is similar but the oil lacks therapeutic values of Extra or No. 1.

Neroli (Citrus aurantium var. amara) essential oil is steam distilled from the flower of the Orange tree. Please make sure the essential oil is labelled this way.
Frankincense essential oil is included here to provide a base or fixative to the blend, thereby making it last longer.

An absolute is the result of extracting the scent in a substance from the flower or its petals. Much exploited in perfumery, an absolute contains the floral aroma plus some extractive material, such as alcohol or hexane. The absolute can then be steam distilled and offered as an absolute-essential-oil. Because Roses are chemically complex, the absolute still carries the therapeutic value of Rose.
